Is Salah undroppable? Is Wirtz a flop?
Liverpool Performance 2025: What’s Going Wrong?
BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty recently answered fans’ questions about the Premier League, especially about Liverpool’s recent struggles and their top players.
Is Mohamed Salah Undroppable?
A fan named Sean asked if Mohamed Salah should always stay in the team, no matter what.
Phil replied that even though Liverpool started the season with wins, the team has not looked fully settled. Bringing in many new players takes time, and the team balance still feels off.
Florian Wirtz, who plays behind the strikers, hasn’t found his rhythm yet. The defense also looks weak, with Ibrahima Konate struggling and two new attack-minded full-backs — Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez — leaving the team more exposed.
Phil said, “No player is undroppable forever.”
Salah hasn’t been at his best this season, and at 33 years old, some decline is natural. Still, he remains a world-class player who could bounce back and play a big role again.
Manager Arne Slot may rest him from time to time — as he did against Galatasaray — but that doesn’t mean Salah’s finished. It’s just smart squad management.
Is Florian Wirtz a £100 Million Flop?
Another fan, Alan, asked if Florian Wirtz is a big transfer mistake since he has zero goals and only one assist in 10 games.
Phil responded that it’s far too early to call him a flop. Wirtz has joined a team in transition, and everyone is still learning to play together.
Even though Liverpool topped the table in the early weeks, their overall performance hasn’t been great. Phil believes Wirtz needs more time to adapt to the Premier League and build chemistry with his teammates.
He added that judging a player after a few games — no matter how high his price — is unfair and short-sighted
Final Thoughts
Liverpool are clearly in a rebuilding phase. Some players are struggling, and others are still adjusting to the new system.
But with time, patience, and experience, stars like Salah and Wirtz can still make a huge impact on Liverpool’s 2025 season.
